The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games is a book where two people from each district [12 districts] fight to the death until one victor remains.  Katness and Peta are from the 12th district, the poorest district, are picked for the Hunger Games. This book is about the 74 Hunger Games and for the first time something different happens. Katness and Peta fight against 22 other people like Kato and Ru.
The Hunger Games is my favorite book. I like it because it is an interesting and violent story. They fight to the death— that is violent. My favorite part is when the tributes train for the Hunger Games. They show what they’re made of in the training. Some are ready, some are not. The Hunger Games is an amazing adventure.
I would recommend this book for older readers and more experienced readers because it is a challenging book. I give this book five paws.

Loving the Nicholas Benedict Society!

My favorite book series is Nicholas Benedict. There are four children. Constance, who is two when the series first starts, is stubborn, cranky, but smart. The next one Sticky Washington loves different languages, so we’re describing him in various languages, Cerdas [Intelligent], Боягуз [coward], stolz [proud], Zenuwachtig wrak [Nervous Wreck]. Now on to Reynard Muldoon likes tea, likes being called Reynie, enjoys speaking Tamil, पसंद के मज़ा रहा[likes having fun], very intelligent. Reynie is the character through which the story is told. Last, but certainly not least, Kate (a.k.a Katie-Cat) is very athletic, intelligent, and likes gymnastics.
I love this series because Nicholas Benedict and I have a lot in common and we think the same way. An example of this is in the first book when Nicholas realizes the treasure is not money, but knowledge. I think the same way because knowledge can bring you money, but money cannot bring you knowledge. This is just one example of why these books are terrific.

I totally recommend this book series, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and I’d love to give it ten paws, but five is the top of our scale.

Trinidad Invades Kentucky!

The University of Kentucky Steel band came to our school last week. They played oil drums that had been dented to create different pitches. We learned that at one time drums were illegal in Trinidad, and so they invented a new instrument that would allow them to play while still obeying the law. They also played traditional instruments and the talking drum.

We loved the performance. The band had a lot of different instruments that had various timbres. For example, the shakers and the cowbells had a high pitch, whereas the big steel pans had a very low pitch. The bamboo instruments were cut into different lengths to make different sounds. We also liked the many different rhythms. For example, the bass instruments played simple rhythms while the smaller instruments played complex, hard patterns. The steel band was one of the best performances we’ve seen all year.

If you have a chance to see the UK Steel Band, you should really take it. They were very entertaining, and we learned a lot of cool history about that region. We give this performance five paws.

Amazing Art!

Here’s a fun project our really cool new art teacher did at the beginning of the year. We had to create a self-portrait on an Ipad, and we had to include some apps of things that we liked … something that would tell her a little about us.  What a creative way to get to know your students!
